Assessing Sexual Behaviors by Socio-Demographic Variables of Korean Citizens

Abstract

|
The study was designed to assess current trends in studying adult sexual behaviors. A self-reported anonymous questionnaire administered to a national representative sample of adults in November 2002. The proportion of never married people who reported being sexually experienced was 40.7% (56.4% for men 24.1% for women). The mean age reported for initiation of sexual intercourse 22.1 years for men and 24.1 years for women. The mean age was significantly younger for men than for women (p＜.001). Younger adults reported significantly younger ages than older adults at initiation of sexual intercourse (p＜.001). Only 21.2% of current sexually active subjects reported consistent use of contraceptive methods. The prevalence of unwanted pregnancy was 37.6% among sexually experienced subjects. The proportion of sexually experienced subjects who had one and more induced abortion was 47.7%. About 43.4% of married men and 15.4% of married women reported having secondary sexual partners. Among subjects who reported having secondary sexual partners, only 25.3% reported consistent use of contraceptive method. This data revealed a number of adults were at risk for unwanted pregnancy, induced abortion and STDs, including HIV infection. Educational and community interventions need to prevent sex-related problems.
